City, Suburbs, or Country?

Would you prefer to live in the city, the suburbs, or the country?

I can’t seem to land on a clear answer for this question. Though I can say for sure that I probably would not flourish in the heart of a big city. Sure, I’m envious of the lifestyle lived in sitcoms like How I Met Your Mother. They make New York look so cool. But I know it’s not for me. I avoid my own mid-sized city’s downtown like the plague. I hate driving around down there and I’m constantly feeling lost on the confusing roads.

I’ve always lived in a more suburban setting. I do expect that I will likely continue to live in suburban neighborhoods. It’s a happy medium. You’re still fairly close to amenities, but you’re not packed tightly in between skyscrapers.

However, if I was to let my heart answer this question, I dare say it would choose the country. Or at least somewhere with a bit of land between myself and my neighbors. I don’t want to be too far from civilization, but I love the idea of having a little separation from the world and especially being surrounded by nature. I have this image in my mind of a porch with a hammock and a view of a big open field. Tall grass and maybe some wildflowers. A light breeze and the sound of children laughing. That sounds like heaven to me.

I’d like to try all three, but I do think I’m something of a big city girl – not that I’ve ever lived right in the heart of a big city, but every time I go to one I just feel so alive. All the hustle and bustle is so exciting, and I never feel overwhelmed, but rather empowered somehow. I get this strange confidence – like I can fend for myself in this crazy world.

    • I know what you mean. I have had good experiences walking around downtown in Chicago and Toronto. If it’s a clean and vibrant area it can be really cool. It does seem like a lot of my prejudice against big cities centers around driving in them. No wonder so many people who live in them don’t even own cars!

I have always lived in a suburban setting as well, and would also like to try living in the country at some point. Aaaand I also am not real big on the idea of living in an urban big city setting. Definitely don’t like crowds and not having the freedom of easily driving around in my own vehicle. Having to rely on an urban transit schedule and living in close proximity with a lot of other people sounds too stressful to me.
